Beloved Neighborhood Peacock, Sugar, ‘Recovering’ After Alleged Postal Worker Attack in Pasadena
A white peacock named Sugar has become the center of an upsetting animal cruelty investigation in Pasadena, California. The neighborhood bird suffered injuries after surveillance video appeared to show a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier throwing objects at him and later striking him with a stick or club.

Some neighbors have grown especially attached to him, and blackberries are reportedly among his favorite treats.
The trouble began during an encounter with a USPS mail carrier on Mohawk Street. Surveillance footage appears to show the worker directing liquid toward Sugar before throwing an object at him. Several reports described that object as a rock, although investigators have not publicly confirmed every detail seen in the footage.
The situation apparently continued near the postal vehicle. Video appears to show the carrier getting out and striking Sugar with an object described by witnesses and news outlets as a stick or club. The bird then appears to thrash around before collapsing in the street.
Local resident Gina Davis and her husband later found Sugar injured and disoriented. Davis told KABC that the peacock appeared “unable to move his wings normally.” One of his eyes was also swollen, raising immediate concerns that he had suffered serious injuries.
Sugar was taken to Pasadena Humane’s Wildlife Center for professional care. Veterinarians found several minor wounds and areas of swelling during their examination. X-rays brought encouraging news because they showed that the peacock had not suffered any broken bones.
Additional reporting said Sugar had swelling around his left eye and abrasions near his left foot. Pasadena Humane nevertheless gave him a good prognosis. His condition has continued to improve since those first worrying hours after the incident.
Some residents have said Sugar can act territorial and sometimes chases people. Neighbors also acknowledged that the peacock had reportedly chased the mail carrier during earlier encounters in the area. USPS has also said postal employees have experienced previous problems involving peacocks in the neighborhood. Those earlier encounters may help explain the tension surrounding the August 18 incident.
Sugar’s Recovery Brings Encouraging News

The peacock’s latest health update is much brighter than the first reports suggested. Pasadena Humane said on August 24 that the peacock was doing well while remaining under professional care. He was mobile, alert, responsive, and showing encouraging signs during his recovery.
Sugar was also eating and drinking normally, which marked another positive step. Pasadena Humane continued to describe his prognosis as good. The update eased some concerns that the encounter might leave Sugar with severe or life-threatening injuries.
His recovery does not mean the case has ended. Pasadena Humane Animal Control continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Sugar’s injuries. Officials have also asked neighborhood residents to provide Ring camera recordings or other surveillance footage that could offer a clearer view of the incident.
Investigators could use additional video to establish what happened before, during, and immediately after the recorded confrontation. A short security clip can capture disturbing actions while still leaving important questions unanswered. More footage could provide useful context as animal control officials determine their next steps.
